The Costa Book Awards is one of the most prestigious and sought-after literary prizes, recognising the best work across a number of genres by writers based in the UK and Ireland. The category winners for each of the five shortlists have now been announced, and must now wait until later in the month to see which of them will win the title Book of the Year - along with the highly desirable £30,000 first prize.
Costa Novel Award
From a strong shortlist including Paul Murray's Booker long-listed Skippy Dies, the winner of the Costa Novel Award is Maggie O'Farrell for The Hand That First Held Mine. O'Farrell is one of the most popular writers in the UK, and it is surprising that although this is her fifth novel, the award is her first major literary honour.
The Hand That First Held Mine tells the parallel stories of Lexie, a young woman making her way in the male-dominated world of journalism in 1950s Soho, and the modern day couple Elina and Ted, who are still adjusting from the difficult birth of their first child, during which Elina nearly died. The novel bears all the hallmarks of an O'Farrell classic, as the two storylines gradually come together through her beautifully crafted prose.
